30DP, Day 8 (Mel)

1. Groomed trails for commuting -- so grateful that I don't have to engage in driver education and bicycle kung-fu all the way to work! I feel like sending the Active Transportation Plan team flowers and a singing telegram.

2. The commute itself -- active transportation seems to be the best (sometimes only) way for me to get the physical activity I need on a regular basis. I'm looking forward to those daily 18 km and hoping for a long stretch of good biking weather.

3. Tiger Balm. God bless the people who make that stuff! However much I enjoyed the ride, my muscles justifiably objected to my lack of preparation for hopping on the bike for the first time this year and driving across town and back.

4. The healing power of music, especially the way the resonance of notes or a true lyric can draw out an emotion I didn't realize was just below the surface.

5. The 4:00 news report -- it wasn't depressing or fear-inducing, for a change, and actually included two "good news" items. What a relief!

6. The sound of the ocean and the feel of sand.

7. "Territories." This game, one I learned at camp as a kid and taught to the kids this summer, has become one of our favourite beach activities. I love that it guarantees time spent together and creates memories, and that all sorts of character development opportunities are embedded.

8. Malcolm's attention to his own body and responsiveness to his needs. When he is tired, he puts himself in bed. When he is not feeling great, he adjusts. When a food isn't settling quite right for some reason, he chooses something else. The level of self-knowledge he shows will serve him well in this life.
